2026 Dubbed the Era of the Frog Game.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been anything but new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. But, their visibility has noticeably increased in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are legitimate titles centered on frogs.
A Data-Driven Dive
To understand this phenomenon, I conducted a detailed review into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The findings paint a clear picture: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat apparent elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the explosion in gaming appears particularly powerful.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
In my opinion, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent design advantages for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues enable a wide array of unique mechanics.
A number of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year so far.
Should these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be witnessing a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
