Hodgkinson Concludes Campaign with Victorious Display at Athlos in NYC
Hodgkinson recorded her fastest time of one minute 54.61 seconds the previous season in London.
Keely Hodgkinson concluded her 800m campaign with a win at the all-female Athlos meet in New York on Friday evening.
{The reigning Olympic gold medallist, who secured third place at the global championships last month, dominated an outstanding win in 1:56.53 in what was just her sixth appearance in a year impacted by a hamstring injury.
Compatriot and world silver medallist Georgia Bell finished second again in one minute 58.33 seconds, while St Vincent's Shafiqua M. (one minute 58.57) claimed third.
"I haven't competed much this year so it was probably easier for me to go out there and be motivated to perform," said the 23-year-old.
"The atmosphere out there is incredible so it was really, really fun."
The women-only event packed the stadium in its second edition, introducing a festive vibe to conventional athletics, with musical performances and Tiffany & Co. crowns replacing standard medals.
The tennis legend with 23 major titles Serena Williams, who is wed to the founder of Athlos Alexis O., was present to present the winners with their crowns.
Last year's winners took home sixty thousand dollars (forty-four thousand six hundred and three pounds) - one of the largest prize purses in track and field.
The event also drew some of the sport's biggest names, as Kenya's three-time Olympic gold medallist and world record holder Faith K. triumphed in the mile race, finishing in four hours 17.78 minutes.
The US Brittany Brown, the 200m bronze winner from last year's Paris Olympics, won the sprint double.
